该大鼠单克隆抗体（克隆号 MP4-25D2）可与人白细胞介素 4 (IL-4) 发生反应。IL-4 是一种分子量约为 15 kDa 的蛋白质，主要由四螺旋束组成（Powers et al.），由多种免疫细胞产生，包括辅助性 T 细胞 2 (Th2)、嗜碱性粒细胞、嗜酸性粒细胞和肥大细胞（Gadani et al.）。它对 IL-4 受体 α (IL-4Rα) 链具有高亲和力，该链可与常见的 γ 链 (γc) 或 IL-13 受体 α 1 (IL-13Rα1) 二聚化，从而激活下游 JAK-STAT 信号通路 (Heller at al.)。 IL-4 参与 CD4+ T 淋巴细胞向 Th2 细胞的分化（Silva-Filho et al.）、B 细胞向 IgE 的类型转换（Geha et al.）以及通过替代途径用 IL-13 激活 M2 巨噬细胞（Gordon et al.）。
