HB15e抗体可特异性识别CD83。CD83是一种分子量约为45 kDa的I型跨膜糖蛋白，属于Siglec蛋白家族，含有胞外V型免疫球蛋白样结构域和C端胞质尾。CD83的一种可溶性形式也已被确定。CD83主要表达于循环和组织树突状细胞，包括Langerhan细胞和交错网状细胞。它在活化淋巴细胞中表达较弱，也可能表达于中性粒细胞、单核细胞和巨噬细胞中。除了树突状细胞外，CD83的表达通常是短暂的，并且与HLA II类抗原的上调相关。它的功能虽然不明确，但对免疫系统的发育和维持至关重要，有证据表明它可能参与细胞粘附和信号传导、抗原递呈以及淋巴细胞活化。CD83的可溶性形式似乎具有免疫抑制作用。研究发现，HB15e抗体结合的CD83表位与抗体1E11的表位重叠。
