8e11抗体可与阶段特异性胚胎抗原5 (SSEA-5) 发生反应。SSEA-5是一种末端H型1聚糖(Fuc1-2Galβ1-3GlcNAcβ1)，在胚胎发生过程中表达于人类囊胚内细胞团细胞表面，也表达于未分化的人类胚胎干细胞(ES)和诱导多能干细胞(iPS)表面。SSEA-5的表达在细胞分化过程中迅速下调。8e11抗体可与其他多能性表面标志物（例如CD9和CD90，或CD50和CD200）联合使用，以从未完全分化的干细胞培养物中分选并去除未分化的畸胎瘤形成细胞。
